• Are most batteries "maintenance free"?  NO!  Most OEM batteries by AC Delco are sealed but almost all replacement batteries are low maintenance batteries, with Interstate Batteries dominating this segment.

The maintenance items that you can sell are as follows:

What causes corrosion on battery terminals?

1. Spillage of the sulfuric acid caused by leaks in the battery casing
2. Overfilling of the water
3. Any overcharging of a battery by the alternator, or charging of a battery at high temperatures
4. Inadequate metal contact caused by a poor or loose electrical connection
5. Exposure to salt

• Battery services can be performed in a matter of minutes and offered at price points starting at under $20 (clean and leak check only), with a middle offering of $19.99—$29.99 for the Battery Equaliser installation only, to up to $40 (Battery Equaliser plus cleaning and leak check and installation of anti-corrosion pads).

• A new installed battery can range in cost from $60—$150, and the cost of being towed or left stranded has a significant cost associated with it to customers, so there will be perceived value for the Battery Equaliser service.

• A $39.99—$49.99 battery maintenance service that includes a top up with Battery Equaliser (for non-sealed batteries), a cleaning of the terminals and connections and the installation of anti-corrosion battery pads can be completed in 20 minutes or less. Use this service to displace low price oil changes.

• Total product cost for this service would be approximately $4-5 for the Battery Equaliser + $.95 for the KleenSeek battery cleaner + $1.25 for the LifeGuard spray application + $2.00 for the battery pads = $8—$9.

• You should have a list of customers that you sold a new battery to in the past 1—3 years. Many of these will be unsealed batteries that are good candidates for the Battery Equaliser service.

• The key to selling this service is educating your customers about the need to maintain a battery, the contributing factors to battery failure and the consequences of battery failure.

• The other key is to frame the sale in terms of responsibility for the safety of our children and/or spouses, and the peace of mind that comes from the protection of the warranty and roadside assistance. The secondary consideration is that it is a good financial decision.
• Battery Equaliser is a proven battery maintenance product used by the US Marines, railroads, the Los Angeles subway system, distribution centers for their electric forklifts and thousands of RV or boat owners.

• Battery Equaliser will not void any battery warranties. If a battery supplier makes that claim VSP and Battery Equaliser will quickly have the situation clarified on your behalf. Doubling battery life is not something battery distributors want, but they cannot void any warranties for products that cannot cause harm to their product.

Battery services can be offered:

1. As a seasonal special in early winter and just before the summer driving season (but a battery inspection should be done on every car that comes into the shop)
2. The service should be offered to parents of small children (don't want to be stranded on roadside)
3. For vehicles that are being serviced on the behalf of a driving age child or spouse
4. On any vehicle that has an obviously older battery
5. One that shows signs of corrosion.

Every vehicle has a battery, and every owner has a dead battery story. If you have the right products and point of sales information on hand you can re-charge your revenues and margins.
