| Oil System Products VSP believes that lubrication issues will be a key area of focus for the industry moving forward for three key reasons: New engine designs are more taxing on oil Ethanol blended into gasoline and carried to the lubrication system by blow-by oxidizes and breaks down the oil OEMs are marketing longer oil change intervals Urban traffic patterns are causing much more stop and go traffic patterns
VSP has a full range of products to service this market area including: EnviroLution's engine off oil flush system RTI's engine on oil flush system Dump in crank case flush chemicals Engine oil supplements
What causes oil to breakdown? Oxidation of the oil and its additives produce acidic compounds that create deposits, cause corrosion, affects viscosity, and can create the basis for sludge - ethanol is an oxygenate in the gasoline and affects the oxidation of the oil - Thermal breakdown affects viscosity especially oils that are not highly refined oils or that lack sufficient anti-oxidants
- Corrosion caused by water condensation and the chemical reactions with heated oil - much worse in cars that sit for extended periods of time and then are driven in stop and go traffic
- Shearing of the molecular structure of the oil from mechanical forces under load and heat creates a decrease in the viscosity of the oil as well as a decrease in the viscosity index and does not revert back to its base structure when the engine is stopped and cooled
A service facility that is doing a good job for its customers will focus on a strategy to help protect the engine's lubrication system by: - Recommending synthetic oils for oil changes, or at a minimum, recommending a quality oil supplement such as Well-Worth's EOA
- Recommending an oil system flush once a year with a dump in product such as Well-Worth's eFlush
- Recommending a full lubrication system flush every 50,000 miles or as a fix for signs of engine sludge using a system such as EnviroLution's lubrication system flush
