Does the Fuel System Cleaning You Offer Reflect on Your Technical Knowledge?
Yes It Does, and Does a 3 Part Chemical Fuel Cleaning Kit Make Sense in 2012?

In 2012 we have hybrids, variable displacement systems, direct injected gasoline engines and widespread use of bio-fuels.

Do you really think your 3 part kit for fuels services is keeping up with technology?  Do chemicals originally developed for carburetors, really have a place in an inline, direct injected, ethanol-blend fuelled, hybrid?

Evolution of The Tune Up
What does "tune up" mean? That the air/fuel and spark are efficiently delivered and timed.
Up to the end of the 80’s the primary focus for insuring a well tuned combustion in an engine was electrical (plugs, wires, rotors, etc.)
With the introduction of electronic fuel injection the biggest issue for efficient combustion was fuel injection cleaning (90’s)
With the introduction of DOHC, multi-valve designs, valve deposits became the main issue for maintaining a proper state of tune many vehicles (late 90’s, early 00’s)
Modern oxygen sensor dependent designs of current vehicles makes oxygen sensor function the primary issue for maintaining a well tuned combustion
Using chemical injector or induction cleanings from the 80’s and 90’s for “preventative maintenance” mis-targets resources, and loosens deposits from non-problem areas and moves them directly to the oxygen sensors and catalyst materials
Federal government EPA is stressing the importance of clean oxygen sensors – much greater impact on fuel economy than a traditional tune up 4% on average vs up to 40%
All oxygen sensors grow lazy over time (noticeable in 12 months) regardless of OEM, resulting in diminished fuel control, change in timing, excessively rich condition, loss of power
Only Terraclean has been documented by multiple third party evaluations to have an immediate, significant improvement in oxygen sensor AND catalytic converter function

Knowledgeable automotive service professionals have recognized for a long time that most fuel system cleanings being marketed today are not technically justified as preventative maintenance services.

  • Induction services are often sold because they can be done quickly by low skilled techs (at a HUGE margins for the chemical company)

  • Induction cleanings are sold as preventative maintenance items on vehicles that don’t have an intake-related drivability issue, and then loosen carbon and move it downstream onto the oxygen sensor and catalytic converter - detrimental in most cases.
Terraclean Terraclean Terraclean
The Terraclean system, sold by Uview Ultraviolet, is the first system proven to target carbon on a preventative maintenance and problem solving basis, and clean the oxygen sensor(s) and catalytic converter(s) at the same time.  Terraclean is really the only
comprehensive fuel and emission system tune up on the market.

Terraclean cleans injectors, O2s and cats with a modified gasoline-based approach resulting in immediate, large reductions in emissions. It is an excellent emissions service item.

Terraclean is one of the most effective injector cleaning systems available. The system was documented by a nationally recognized injector expert to clean zero flow injectors back to OEM spec flow rates.

Competing systems cause noxious emissions and expose technicians to chemical fumes. Terraclean generates near zero emissions while cleaning. It is the safest system for your technicians and often results in significant increases in tech recommendations for the service.

Terraclean is one of the easiest systems to use and comes with a CD-ROM that shows the hook up for every vehicle from 1987—2006.

When Do I Recommend a Terraclean Tune Up Service?

Initially you should recommend Terraclean when driveability or fuel mileage declines or 20,000 miles or after the vehicle is 2 years old.

After that Terraclean should be an Annual Air/Fuel Management Tune Up.

Why annual and not a mileage recommendation?  Because the folks that drive 4,000 miles in a year (infrequent use), accumulate varnish deposits, are succeptible to phase separation issues in ethanol blend areas like Illinois, and rarely get the engine hot enough to light off the O2 sensors and Cat or to "blow out the carbon".

The person that does 40,000+ miles on the highway can use it once a year because of the accumulated miles.

The bottom line is that close to 100% of vehicles currently in garages should be offered a Terraclean Tune Up and it WILL be your largest source of maintenance profits.

Almost every competitor of yours is offering a chemical "injection cleaning" or a chemical induction cleaning.  You need to differentiate yourself and offer services that justify higher margins for you.

What is the Most Effective Way to Sell Terraclean?

Fuel system cleanings were easy to sell in 1999.  The injector developed deposits regularly, the vehicle mis-fired and ran and idled poorly, an engine code was created and the customer quickly came to see you.

In 2012 the engine management system computer is very powerful and very quick to compensate for deposits.  As soon as a mis-fire is detected the ECM quickly adds more fuel (runs richer) and retards the timing (loss of power) to keep a "smooth" engine operation.

The customer feels a smooth idle and does not have a light on the dashboard to drive them to you for a solution.

If you just recommend the service based on miles or time, your close rate will be low because the customer does not perceive a problem.  Why spend money on a smooth driving car?

If you ask: Has your fuel mileage declined since you bought the car? Almost everyone will say yes.

If you then ask: When you go to merge or pass, does your car accelerate like when you first got it?  Almost everyone will again answer no.

You have now got them to admit 2 problems with their car.  Now explain to them that since they aren't due for an electrical tune up it is likely that those two problems relate to deposits, especially on the O2 sensors.

Recommend Terraclean as a solution.

The system has an “S” tool attachment to clean the intake at the same time as the fuel rail service is being conducted for those vehicles with an intake problem. The benefit with the Terraclean system is that there is then a secondary step to clean what has been loosened from the O2s and cats.

Terraclean’s post combustion cleaning is an important step after any intake cleaning (such as the Well-Worth or BG services) to remove the displaced O2 and cat deposits.

This system is the most complete, technically effective, and cost effective service available on the market. It is the type of service that you would be proud to do on your father’s car.
