After fuel system cleanings and coolant flushes, transmission flush services should be a service that is regularly done in the shop.
Transmission services can be not worth the risk if you do not have the proper equipment and the proper chemicals. Most everyone has heard a story about a transmission that was operating without any symptoms of a problem, only to die within days of having a flush done.
Fortunately current flush equipment technology and chemicals make this a thing of the past.
It is always key to go back to basics and move forward from there. The function of the automatic transmission fluid is to:
Provide operatin
g pressure to allow power to be transferred from engine to drive wheels Transfer heat from transmission components to transmission cooler
Provides lubrication and corrosion protection to transmission components
What causes transmission fluid to break down? Fluid oxidation due to operating temperature changes destroys fluids ability to lubricate and keep internal parts clean. A loss of detergency reduces the fluids ability to suspend debris from internal transmission compon
ents.
Common causes for transmission fluid to breakdown thermally would be severe operating conditions such as
excessive wheel spin (stuck in mud, or on ice), continuous use for towing or hauling loads, operating in extreme temp
eratures. Over time the fluid will collect debris to the point that it cannot suspend any more.
The remedy for this situation is to introduce a cleaner such as Well-Worth's TransKleen with extra
detergency to system to loosen any debris and to suspend it in the fluid. Flush equipment such as Flo Dynamics TSD 450 is connected to allow system cleaning and complete fluid exchange.
A conditioner like Well-Worth's TransVital is added to new fluid to boost the fluid's ability to clean and protect internal transmission components.
