Many shop owners are working hard and spending significant money to increase their car counts. Low cost oil changes are used to lure cars in for the opportunity to find other repair work during the inspection.
While the $150 brake job is the goal, no vehicle should leave with just an oil change. The majority of vehicles that come into your shop will have wipers that are older than 6 months old with obvious signs of wear, weathering and frankly they look unattractive.

The bottom line is that a low price oil change should turn into a low price oil change, plus wipers or some other low price point service plus a major maintenance item or required repair.
If the larger price point items are refused, the customer will usually not default down to just the oil change, but will give you the wipers or low price point service with the oil change.
Visibility is a key safety concern—most people have been unable to see in traffic and will pay not to experience that again.
Shops that are selling wiper blades on an ad hoc basis are letting hundreds of dollars per month walk out their door.
Are you recommending the change of the wipers to the large majority of your customers?
Are you creating a sense of urgency for your customer to change the wipers every 2– 3 oil changes?
When they agree to changing the wipers, do you give them a premium offer that would add margins to your ticket?
Do you have point of sales materials that support your efforts and help you to close the sale of these items?
Going from 1 set of blades every 2—3 days to 3 sets of blades every day will generate an additional $1,000—$1,200 dollars in cash/month on part sales, and a similar amount in installation.
Is there a lot of work to gain an extra $2,000 in cash per month for your pocket? The answer is no. It just requires diligence.
If you are able to purchase your blades at a lower cost, or to switch a percentage of your wiper blades to a premium blade, and add a windshield treatment, then the increase in cash flow should exceed $1,500—$2,000 per mont
h or more.

Offer premium products like ArcFlex or UltraSilblade
Add window treatments to your service board
Saver’s Vision Saver line is a high quality, rubber replacement blade with a patented arm adapter that allows you to achieve 98% market coverage with 15 sku’s. Saver’s price point and low inventory requirement makes it the most profitable rubber replacement option.
Saver’s ArcFlex premium beam blade is targeted to the 70% of new vehicles that use this blade design. ArcFlex’s cost advantage, low SKU and patented arm adapter makes it a slam dunk choice. Up to $6/blade less than Bosch beam blades.
The UltraSilblade is a 5 year guaranteed wiper with color-matched arms and blade that has a great close rate and excellent margin. All silicone wipe tested to over 1,000,000 wipes provides a compelling sales pitch. It is the type of product that you will get for yourself and all of your friends.

An ap
plication of a window treatment, like SilBead, on all windows of the car will earn good margins and have a high close rate. It will also be a repeat service a couple times per year that will earn high customer satisfaction. Tie repeat applications or “top ups” to your oil change program.
Visibility safety is an easy area to grow revenues and customer satisfaction at the same time.
VSP will work with you and your staff to increase your cash flow in this sales segment through training, point of sales support and innovative products.
